At Long Island Dermatology, we offer a number of methods of cosmetic enhancement, for both men and women. One of the more popular procedures in this day and age, is the Lash Perm or Eyelash Perm, procedure. The lash perm is similar to the perm you may get for the hair on your head, as the chemicals are used to break down disulfide bonds along the hair, so that they may be curled easily.
Eyelash Perm Procedure
We recommend patients come to their appointments without any makeup on or around their eyelashes, so that we may properly apply the necessary solutions. Also, refrain from using eye makeup remover with oils or other moisturizers, as it will prevent the solutions from working properly.
To begin the eyelashes may be cleaned if needed, then we apply a small layer of brushing glue or some similar type of cream, onto the eyelids in order to protect the skin. A small hand-rolled rod is then placed up against the top lash line between the lid and the upper lashes, similar to a roller used to curl one’s hair. Depending upon the size of the curl, the rod may be larger or smaller.
After the lashes are in place, we apply the first solution, which helps to break down disulfide bonds holding the hair straight in place. This solution is left on for about 15 minutes. Once these bonds are broken, you can reshape the lashes around the rod. Covering the eyes with plastic can sometimes boost the process.
After the 15-minute period, the second solution will be applied, sometimes known as the activator. This activator repairs the disulfide bonds and will allow the lashes to stay in their curled position. Giving our patients the perfect, curled eyelashes. The process is pain-free and is generally completed in under an hour.
